Pundits will typically declare that school shootings are " on the rise," though it is questionable how accurate this statement is. Although the number of school shootings in the United States is extraordinarily high, they have happened in many countries around the world. While a school shooting can, technically speaking, encompass any kind of criminal event involving a gun at a school (including gang violence, etc), the term is most widely used to refer to a specific type of massacre involving few participants shooting a large number of innocent/unarmed people before turning the gun on themselves or being stopped by another person, typically law enforcement.
